There’s so much being said about detoxing and cleansing and what you’ve heard is true — a proper detox can really help you achieve health benefits. Just as you focus on the foods you eat and the amount of exercise you get, there are many other elements to living your best and healthiest life. Take a look at our list of top 10 simple, natural, and undoubtedly effective ways of ridding your system of toxins and welcoming good health:
When it comes to natural cleansing, replace one meal a day with a detoxifying smoothie. This isn’t extreme and won’t cause any harm. Toss some healthy things like leafy greens, fresh fruit and superfoods into your blender, purée for a minute on high-speed and voilà, a metabolism booster in a cup! I love sipping a green smoothie on my drive to work — it makes for a nutritious on-the-go breakfast.
While you don’t have to be a complete organic snob, there are certain foods where this is a necessity. The list known as the ‘Dirty Dozen’ contains a number of foods that are full of pesticides and preservatives and you end up consuming them. The general rule of thumb is that if you eat the peel or the outside of the fruit or vegetable, you should really opt for organic. Strawberries, apples and tomatoes are good examples of types of food where organic matters.
The great thing about superfoods is that they’re loaded with important nutrients and antioxidants that your body needs to fight off infection and harmful toxins. Some of my favourite superfoods include salmon, avocado, walnuts, almonds, olive oil, flax seeds, blueberries, raspberries, kale and spinach. Try incorporating them into every meal. Not only are they healthy, low-fat food choices, but they also help you boost your nutrient intake.
You might think of massage as a relaxing luxury (which, of course, it can be in some instances), but it also happens to be an excellent way of detoxifying your body. It all depends on the kind of massage you get. Suffice to say that if you’re interested in eliminating toxins from your body, it has to be intense and focus on your pressure points. A Swedish massage is good, but more intense and focused is a sports massage, which works even better.
Even if you think you’re glugging down lots of h H2O every day, take your intake to a whole new level. If there’s one thing that helps you detox, it’s water. Water can help flush out your system naturally and, when you drink enough, this happens routinely. Sufficient water intake can also contribute to properly functioning organs and more effective circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems, as well as clearer skin. Forget the eight-glasses-a-day rule and try to drink more than that.
A little caffeine is okay, but you have to be careful about how much coffee you drink daily. If you want to detox, then substitute your coffee with green tea. It’s packed with antioxidants and also offers a slight caffeine boost that can help jumpstart you in the morning. It’ll also hydrate you, boost your metabolism and improve digestion.
You know that exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, right? However, there’s much more to it than just that. When you exercise, not only do you help your body burn fat but you also help it get rid of toxins. As you sweat, these toxins are released. Plus, exercise elevates your mood by releasing feel-good hormones.
Acupuncture is an excellent way to eliminate toxins in your body if you can get past the idea of those needles! It causes toxins to be released via your urine, blockages in your body are eliminated and circulation increased. It’s important that you go to a licensed acupuncturist, however, so do your homework! It’s a highly effective treatment and you feel better almost instantly.
Some of these kinds of toxins include exhaust fumes, smog, household cleaners, second-hand smoke and chemical fumes. Unfortunately, they are all around us and all you can do is avoid them as far as possible as they are hazardous to your health.
You may regard sleep as a luxury, but it’s important for your health as your body detoxes and repairs itself while you sleep. The liver does most to this work in the early hours of the morning. Without proper sleep you can gain weight, have a compromised immune system and, of course, lack energy. Try and get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. This gives your body time to rest, recuperate and repair cells. Research has found that sleep deprivation can be as detrimental to your body as illness, and people who don’t sleep enough are more at risk for heart attacks and stroke. What’s really interesting though, is that sleep detoxifies your brain! So get those Zs in every night!
