When you think of Benoni, what comes to mind? We are almost 100% sure that it’s not a Victorian-style home, renovated into one of Joburg’s finest patisseries. However, don’t let the location of this delightful cake shop and cafe deter you from paying them a visit. The Victorian Secret is all about whimsy – from the brick facade, to the magical rose garden and, of course, the delicately crafted pastries. It’s the perfect place to host an Alice in Wonderland themed high tea or birthday party.

Victorian Essence

From the street, you are greeted by a magnificent oak tree and shady tables. Sit outside on a sunny day to catch the breeze. The decor and features, from the classic window panes to the white tables and chairs, pay homage to a bygone era. If you have ever wanted to step back in time, this is the place to do so. The only thing missing from this scene is a frilly parasol and top hat. (We dare you to dress up in Victorian regalia on your first visit, just for the fun of it!)

Artisans And Sugar Masters

The Victorian Secret’s kitchen is steered by culinary captains, Chef Marike and Head Chef, Sarah. These two ladies are the masterminds behind all of The Victorian Secret’s artisan, hand-crafted pastries, cakes, cookies and breads. In keeping with the times, TVS offers gluten-free, Banting, vegetarian and Halaal options. Have their expert bakers craft your perfect wedding, birthday or graduation cake. They can even whip up an impressive sugar-spun French croquembouche, decorated with pretty edible flowers. These light choux pastry puffs, filled with your choice of flavoured creme patissiere, make the perfect showstopper dessert.

If you try only one sweet treat from The Victorian Secret, we recommend a brightly coloured macaron. While these classic French meringues have popped up all over Joburg in recent years, TVS is one of the few patisseries who know how to make them just right. Paired with a strong cup of tea, a macaron is the ideal afternoon indulgence.

Traditional High Tea

Speaking of tea, The Victorian Secret serves up a savoury meets sweet afternoon tea for groups of up to 20 guests. Playing on the traditional 19th Century high tea pioneered by the Duchess of Bedford, with cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, flavoured teas and even Victorian crockery. For only *R200 a head, this high tea is one of the most affordable you can find in the city. That is not to take anything away from the quality of the menu. The Victorian Secret serves up high tea just as good as any patisserie in Joburg North, so keep them in mind for when you feel the need to fight off the afternoon slump.

Breakfast Elegance

If high tea isn’t your cup of tea, then take a peek into The Victorian Secret’s set breakfast menu. A starter of homemade granola served with fresh seasonal fruit and yoghurt, accompanied by bottomless filter coffee and tea or one jug of freshly squeezed fruit juice to share between six people. Mains offer you fluffy scrambled egg, bacon, mushroom, cocktail tomatoes and a freshly baked croissant. If that wasn’t enough to fill your belly, then tuck into a sweet platter filled with assorted bakery delights! You have never had breakfast this good, we guarantee.
